Botanical Garden of Saint-Petersburg

St. Petersburg Botanical Garden is one of the oldest in our country. Garden served as the basis "Apothecary Garden", founded by Peter I in 1714 for the cultivation of medicinal herbs, as well as rare and interesting "foreign" plants. The growth of collections and the importance of studies on the plant led to the establishment in 1823 of the Imperial Botanical Garden. During 1823-1824 years, built a square greenhouses, which lay largely preserved to this day. At the same time created the park. By 1913, the garden becomes the center of the national botanical science and one of the leading botanical institutions in the world.

Botanical Garden has a rich collections of living plants in greenhouses and in the park. In the greenhouses of the Botanical Garden, covering an area of about 1 ha, and the total length of 1 km, collections of living plants, with more than 7,5 thousand species of plants, including the most remote and exotic corners of the planet. Greenhouses affect the abundance and variety of plants. Here you can see the "hanging gardens" of epiphytes, living high on the branches of tropical trees, there are seen the same lace fern.

Every year in the greenhouses fruit mangoes, cocoa, coffee, flakurtiya (tropical plum), bananas, citrus fruits (lemon, mandarin, orange), Japanese medlar, fig, pineapple guava, pomegranate and a number of other plants.

Abundant flowering wattle, since February, and flowering of some species extends to July; kallistemony; palm, jasmine, strong and pleasant aroma which captures the visitor entering the greenhouse. Particularly interesting collection of heather, winter feast for the eyes graceful Eric, and azaleas bloom in spring, turning a greenhouse into a blooming garden.
